How to File an FIR or Zero FIR

Understanding the process of filing a First Information Report with the police.

Step 1: Go to the Police Station

Visit the nearest police station. For serious offenses (like assault or sexual harassment), you can go to ANY police station to file a 'Zero FIR', which will later be transferred to the correct jurisdiction.

Step 2: Narrate the Incident

Provide all details of the incident sequentially to the officer on duty. Mention time, place, and names of individuals involved if known.

Step 3: Written Document

The officer will write down your complaint. You can also provide a pre-written complaint.

Step 4: Read and Verify

Carefully read the FIR written by the police. Ensure nothing is added or omitted.

Step 5: Sign the FIR

Sign the document only after you are satisfied with its contents.

Step 6: Obtain Your Copy

Demand a copy of the FIR. Under law, it is your right to receive a copy of the FIR free of cost immediately.
